EVENT: Cycling – Women’s Mountain Bike Cross Country

Sammie Maxwell emerged as a prominent figure in New Zealand mountain biking. Originally from Taupo and based in Wellington, she first represented New Zealand at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

In 2023, Maxwell made history by winning the women's under-23 cross-country title at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Glasgow, becoming the first New Zealand woman to claim the title. That same year, she secured victories at the UCI MTB World Cup events in France and the USA, finishing third overall in the series. She also clinched the runner-up position in the under-23 short track series.

In 2024, Maxwell delivered an impressive performance at the Paris Olympic Games, finishing 8th in the women's mountain bike event .
